Use of probiotics in water quality management during shrimp culture

The use of probiotics in water quality management was investigated during the culture of the black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, in a shrimp farm with 4 ponds. A commercial probiotic (NS Series Super SPO) was applied to the first 3 ponds with the fourth pond serving as the control. Transparency levels were lower in experimental ponds due to increased plankton production. In all ponds oxygen level was in the required range due to the use of paddle wheel aerators. However, oxygen and pH levels werehigher in the experimental ponds. Ammonia levels were lower in the experimental ponds. Nutrients such as nitrate, phosphate and silicate levels were also higher in the experimental ponds than in the control pond. All water quality parameters showed optimum levels in experimental ponds compared with the control. Thus experimental ponds led to better average daily growth and production of shrimps.
