The presence of chronic bee paralysis virus infection in honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) in the USA

Chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV) is a disease agent of adult honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) that causes characteristic “paralysis” symptoms,including an abnormal trembling of the body and wings and sometimeshairless, shiny, and darkened bees that are barred from returning totheir colony at the hive entrance (Bailey, 1975). CBPV occurs in beesas an inapparent infection, but sometimes the virus can multiply tohigh levels leading to host and colony mortality (Allen and Ball, 1996).Amongst viruses infecting honey bees, CBPV is unique because of theasymmetrical morphology of the viral particles and the co-packagingof multipartite positive-strand RNA genomes in a single virion (Olivieret al., 2008). Currently, CBPV has not yet been assigned to aparticular virus genus or family.
