Direct biological treatment cannot be used on olive oil mill wastewaters (OOMW) as they contain phytotoxic and non-biodegradable compounds. This study developed an efficient, heterogeneous catalytic pretreatment (wet hydrogen peroxide catalytic oxidation - WHPCO, using a metal-organic framework as catalyst) to increase OOMW biodegradability and enable it to be biologically oxidised. OOMW biodegradability was assessed before and after treatment. Results showed that the WHPCO process significantly improved OOMW biodegradability, and that the catalyst was selective with respect to non-biodegradable compounds. Processing time was also significantly reduced, and the catalyst is recoverable and reusable.
