Management of aflatoxin contaminated maize in Tamaulipas, Mexico.

During 1989-95, a rural warehousing facility in Tamaulipas, Mexico, stored aflatoxin-contaminated maize; the measures that were taken to control it are described. The aflatoxin-contaminated maize was analysed chemically by immunoaffinity columns, fluorometry and thin layer chromatography in grain, weeds and soil of the warehouse "Las Yescas". Morphological and tributyrin biochemistry tests performed to identify species of Aspergillus in grain, weeds and soil, identified mainly A. flavus. The mean levels of total aflatoxin found were 66μg/kg from 42 samples of sieved maize, 295μg/kg from 49 samples of unsieved maize, 25μg/kg from 7 weed samples and 112μg/kg from 9 soil samples. Sieving reduced the aflatoxin content by 75%. Soil always containedAFB2, and sometimes AFB1, due to the high contamination.
