On-farm trial to determine the durability of different concrete slats for fattening pigs.

Seven types of concrete slats were tested in a pig building for their durability. The slats comprised of the following: (1) concrete containing portland cement, the controls (1a and 1b were impregnated with epoxy resins S and B, respectively); (2) blast furnace slag cement, 36-65% slag; (3) blast furnace slag cement 66-80% slag; (4) composite cement, 18-30% slag, 18-30% fly ash; (5) Portland cement without tricalcium aluminate; (6) concrete with 15% fly ash; and (7) concrete with 10% silica fume. The slats dimensions were 2X0.5X0.09 m, and had a mass of 130 kg. Six slats of each type were placed in pairs in 36 pens within 3 compartments of a pig fattening house underneath and in front of the wet-feeders. At the beginning and every 4.5 months the slats were cleaned and average texture depth (R) of surface roughness of the concrete was determined by the sand-patch test in 4 positions. The average attack depth (D) was also measured in the same positions. After 4.5 months little D damage was visuallynoticeable. After 9 months concrete deterioration could be observed, especially in front of the wet-feeders. Slats in this position made of (2) (0.58 and 0.49 mm) and (7) (0.41 and 0.58 mm) showed the largest increases in R and D, respectively. Concrete(1) D was 0.30 mm. Only cements 1a and 1b performed as well as the control cement in the 9-month on-farm trials.
