The Arctic environment has become a focus of international scientific investigation during the last several decades as the potential delicacy of its climate system with respect to anthropogenic effects has become better understood.Unlike most regions,there are few human-derived sources of aerosol and only very small natural sources for aerosol in the Arctic.As a result,transport of aerosol and its gaseous precursors from industrialized Europe,Asia,and North America form a crucial and,at times,dominating component of the aerosol budget.The optical properties of the aerosol create a 'forcing' to the Earth's climate that may extend well beyond the Arctic (Hansen et al.,2002).Understanding the magnitude of the effects of the aerosol pollution on the polar ecosystem and ultimately global climate are a crucial stop to the development of an appropriate strategy for controlling and reducing the extent of Arctic air pollution.
