摘要

The solubility of atmospheric particulate matter influences the hygroscopic growth of particles and thus aerosol chemistry and light extinction properties1.Aerosol solubility also affects the ability of particles to create cloud droplets2 and thus cloud formation and lifetime (and consequently,the radiation balance of the earth).The dry deposition of insoluble particles to leaf surfaces is believed to negatively influence plant growth3 and thus CO2 uptake.In addition to these climatic influences,insoluble aerosols are thought to adversely affect human health4.Unfortunately,to date,very little scientific information has been gathered concerning the quantity of insoluble particulate matter present in the atmosphere.
