Approximately 600 000 percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) are performed annually in the United States. Periprocedural bleeding is a common complication of PCI, occurring in 2% to 6% of cases. Bleeding is associated with major adverse events, including short- and long-term mortality, as well as prolonged hospital length of stay (LOS) and higher hospital costs. Periprocedural bleeding seems to be predictable and modifiable.
