ANEW GUIDELINE ON TREATMENT of depression provides an overview of the effectiveness of various therapeutic options and offers stronger guidance on assessing suicide risk, as well as on the care of pregnant and postpartum women and patients who have difficult-to-treat depression.The new guideline, released in October by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) (http://www.psych.org /guidelines/mdd2010), updates a previous version issued in 2000. Its recommendations are based on a review of more than 10 000 studies published since 2000, and each recommendation is given a rating based on the strength of the evidence supporting it. Before publication, a draft version was submitted to the APA's membership and approved by the association's assembly.
