Corinth wrote in his journal (April 15,1923) that painting is "a totally sensual expression." The featured painting certainly reflects this sentiment, but Corinth's second portrait of Friedrich, executed in 1912, depicts the mature sculptor garbed in a heavy turtleneck sweater and baggy slacks, surrounded by works in progress and amid the tools of his trade. Although this painting lacks the elan so prominent in the earlier work, it may reflect the increased gravitas of the sculptor himself. Both portraits precede the period of the Great War, whose tragedy and horror left the scars of depression on Corinth, from which he probably never recovered.
