Leaders of the "100,000 Lives Campaign" have announced that hospitals have reduced lethal mistakes and breakdowns in care to prevent the unnecessary deaths of more than 120,000 patients in the last 18 months. The main components of the campaign included the deployment of rapid response teams for emergency care of patients whose vital signs suddenly deteriorated, the additional checks on medications to protect against drug errors, and the prevention of surgical site infections.
