Dr Fried's remarks about our article1 are similar to feedback I have received from other journal editors. One common theme of these comments is the opposition of fostering research through extrinsic motivation rather than intrinsic motivation. Behavior driven by extrinsic motivation involves doing things in exchange for things such as money, promotion, or prestige. Behavior driven by intrinsic motivation involves doing things for self-reward or fulfilling a noble aspiration. Many have argued that resident research should be intrinsically motivated.
