TMS facilitated the first step on a journey of innovation in February 2010 when it convened the Energy Materials Blue Ribbon Panel--comprised of 21 thought leaders in materials science and engineering (MSE)--charged with creating a vision linking transformational materials and processing technologies as the building blocks of an energy-efficient and low-carbon economy. The work of the panel constituted the first phase of a two-part study in support of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) and funded by Oak Ridge National Laboratory to inform the creation of a core MSE research and development portfolio supporting the realization of a sustainable and secure energy future. The culmination of the panel's efforts was the release of Linking Transformational Materials and Processing for an Energy-Efficient and Low-Carbon Economy: Creating the Vision and Accelerating Realization, which is presented in its entirety as a special insert at the end of this issue of JOM.
