Los Alamos Researchers Apply Superconductivity Knowledge to Magnetic Separators

Los Alamos researchers have applied their high-temperature superconductor expertise to magnetic separators, an adaptation that could result in more cost-effective papermaking, high volume water purification systems, and powerful, portable units that could clean up contaminated soils on site. The work is part of a cooperative research and development agreement between Los Alamos and Eriez Magnetics. "By using high-temperature superconducting systems in magnetic separators, companies can make their separation processes more cost effective," said Mark Daugherty of the Los Alamos Superconductivity Technology Center at the Applied Superconductivity Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
