In February, members of the aluminum, steel, and automotive industries pledged their support for Climate Voluntary Innovative Sector Initiatives: Opportunities Now (Climate VISION), a new U.S. climate change initiative issued by U.S. President George W. Bush. The new initiative is designed to reduce the nation's greenhouse gas intensity by 18 percent over the next ten years. The Business Roundtable, an international group of 150 CEOs, will ask its member companies to cut greenhouse gas emissions without targeting any specific goals; the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, a group often major U.S. and international automakers, has announced that its members will cut greenhouse gas emissions at their manufacturing plants by 10 percent from 2002 levels by 2012; and the U.S. steel industry has committed to a 10 percent decrease in energy consumption per ton of steel shipped over the next ten years, according to Environment and Energy Daily.
