International Tunnelling Award 2011 and T & T Award 2011 for REHAU

Due to their large areas in contact with soil or rock, tunnel structures may supply a high degree of geothermal energy REHAU has developed a system in order to exploit this potential. Thus, pipelines are integrated into the precast concrete elements (tubbings) of the tunnel so that heat can be extracted from the structure in winter and can be used for heating purposes in the surroundings If necessary, this may also serve to cool the tunnel in a particularly efficient way. For these energy tubbings which have already been utilised successfully in an Austrian project, REHAU has now together with the planning office Arup and the general contractor Zublin, been honoured with the International Tun-nelling Award 2011 in Hong Kong in the "Technical Innovation of the Year" cat egory. In addition, there was the T &T Award 2011 in the "Innovative Use of Equipment" category.This award is presented every year by the British journal "tunnels & tunnelling International".
