Onychomycosis due to Fusarium spp. in patient with squamous celt carcinoma: A case report from Kerman, Iran Onychomycose due a Fusarium sp. chez un patient atteint de carcinome cutane a Kerman, Iran

Fusarium species have been frequently reported as etiologic agents of opportunistic infections such as onychomycosis in humans. We report a case of a distal onychomycosis due to Fusarium spp. in the region of Kerman in Iran. The infection occurred in a man with finger squamous cell carcinoma. Nail specimen was examined by direct microscopy, culture and histopathology, and the isolated fungus was identified morphologically as Fusarium spp. The patient was treated with terbinafine for two months, but clinical cure was not completely observed and relapse of infection was occurred. Histopathological examination showed the presence of fungal organisms located near the nail bed epidermis. The final diagnosis was included squamous cells carcinoma (microinvasive) coincided with onychomycosis due to Fusarium spp. It is recommended that more attention should be given to the relevance of the predisposing factors such as cancer, which have result in development of infection and treatment failure.
