Buried in the news last week, amidst all the rhetoric flowing on both sides of the Presidential race, was the announcement of the the most recent Institute of Medicine (IOM) publication Best Care at Lower Cost: The Path to Continuously Learning Health Care in America.1 The news blurbs caught my attention as the IOM publications tend to be real-world based and not tied to a political agenda or rhetoric. That does not mean that their recommendations are without frustration for rank and file physicians, especially on the subject of cost containment.
