The Oklahoma children's health plan: keeping kids healthy.

In 2008, the Oklahoma State Board of Health, concerned about the state's low ranking on important health status indicators, convened a strategic planning retreat to chart a course of improvement. The Oklahoma Health Improvement Planning team emerged as an outgrowth of this effort that included key workgroups targeted on three flagship initiatives: 1) children's health, 2) obesity reduction and 3) tobacco use prevention. The team developed the Oklahoma Health Improvement Plan 2010-2014 (OHIP) in December 2009, which included recommendations from each of the flagship groups as well as recommendations covering the state's health care infrastructure, related to the areas of 1) public finance; 2) workforce development; 3) access to care; and 4) health system effectiveness.
