摘要

Infectious Mononucleosis (IM) is caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), which is a member of the herpes virus family. EBV infects 90% of all adults by age 30, often presenting with an asymptomatic response to the virus. In the United States, IM infections peak at 15-21 years old, with 1% to 3% of college students developing the infection yearly. No seasonal variation exists for contraction the virus. Transmission occurs primarily through sneezing and salivary contact, and humans are the only vector for the contagion. Early exposure in life often results in subclinical cases, but if the infection is acquired later in life or in the immunocompromised state the result may be a severe response to the virus.
