There are several reasons patients with CHF may be at higher risk for thrombotic events.1 These include stasis within hypokinetic sections of the left ventricle, hypercoagulability associated with changes in cardiac physiology, inactivity due to disease-related symptoms, and underlying artherothrombotic disease, now the most common cause of heart failure.Stasis predisposes patients to thromboembolism. Cardiac chamber dilation, poor contractility, regional wall abnormalities or concomitant atrial fibrillation (AF) can all lead to abnormal blood flow and stasis increasing the risk of thromboembolism.
