Sport sailing yachts for this type of competition need to be very light for speed, yet made of components with the necessary strength/stiffness to ensure the boat's stability in high-sea conditions. To reach both goals, many sport sailing yacht developers rely on composite materials,since these provide many advantages (e.g. an exceptional weight-strength/ stiffness ratio) over traditional material such as aluminium, wood or steel. However, composite materials also confront engineers with new challenges regarding design and manufacturing processes. They require cutting-edge CAE software for the development and an experienced team that knows how to utilize these sophisticated simulation methods.
