摘要

A large population of patients is not amenable to complete revascularization with currently available techniques, including percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). In the present era, we have been very effective at acutely treating myocardial infarction (MI) and the ensuing negative sequelae, namely cardiogenic shock, acute mitral regurgitation, post-Mi ventricular septal defects, ventricular rapture, and death. But, unfortunately, the incidence of ischemic heart failure continues to increase. A justifiably large interest has been devoted to discovery of alternate revascularization strategies to completely revascularize myocardium and prevent the deleterious cycle of cardiomyocyte dysfunction, apoptosis, cell slippage, ventricular dilatation, and heart failure that ensues.
