Japan's Six Major Mini Mills Announce F2001 Business Results, Three Posting Increased Earnings, Two Returning to Black

Japan's six major mini mills announced their business results for fiscal 2001 ended March this year. While Tokyo Tekko increased its sales, the other five posted decreased sales. In terms of pre-tax profit, three makers - Godo Steel, Osaka Steel and Tokyo Tekko - improved their figures, and two - Yamato Kogyo and Tokyo Kotetsu - got back into the black thanks to low ferrous scrap prices in the first six months of the period. Their earnings in the second half all decreased as scrap prices picked up and the loss of Tokyo Steel Mfg., in particular, deteriorated with the sharply declining second-half performance.
