"There's been a massive separation between the key activity indicators in our business in the oilfield industry. Historically, we have always relied on the rig count as the key metric to analyze and forecast oil service company earnings and revenue," Marshall Adkins, managing director of Raymond James & Associates, said. "Not anymore. The well count is separating from the rig count, while the footage drilled and frac stages are up meaningfully more than the rig count."
