Automated systems are commonplace in many industries but remain a challenge for the oil industry's drilling domain. Various attempts at drilling automation have been made over the past 30 years, but a main barrier has been getting different subcontractors to work together. However, recent advances in information technology, networking and interoperability standards are providing opportunities to achieve "plug and play."
