AkzoNobel has opened a new chlorine membrane electrolysis plant in the Rhein-Main area of Germany. Engineered to be highly energy-efficient, the Frankfurt-based plant is the result of a major conversion and expansion project begun in 2011. With over ?140 million invested by the company, the plant's capacity has been increased by 50% while also reducing its environmental footprint by approximately 20%. AkzoNobel has converted the facility to use cutting-edge membrane technology and has made improvements in efficiency that will reduce energy consumption by 30% per ton of product. The new plant will also raise chlorine production capacity by up to 250 kilotons per year.
