PaintCare~R Landmark Paint Stewardship Program Launched in Vermont

On May 1, 2014, PaintCare? program operations were officially launched in Vermont, making it the fourth state to institute this program in the United States. The paint stewardship program, established by Vermont Act 58 and signed into law by Gov. Peter Shumlin in 2013, requires paint manufacturers to develop a take-back system for leftover paint from household and commercial consumers. PaintCare's pilot program was first launched in Oregon in 2010. Since then, programs have started in California and Connecticut and are also being planned for Rhode Island, Minnesota, and Maine, where legislation to bring the landmark paint stewardship program to those states is on the books. In April, the Colorado legislature passed PaintCare legislation, and Gov. John Hickenlooper is expected to sign the bill into law.
