One Manufacturer's Views on Sustainability Initiatives

Sustainable manufacturing is a multifaceted pursuit that may involve a wide variety of approaches, processes, and concepts to achieve variable objectives. However, the central mission for the "green" chemi-cal manufacturer is to reduce negative environmental impacts such as air emissions, waste, and product toxicity while fostering environmental stewardship. Companies serving the paint and coatings industry have certainly made strides in green initiatives, reducing volatile organic compounds (VOC) in raw materials and coatings. In this issue, CoatingsTech profiles one such company—Emerald Performance Materials—and reports on some of their initiatives as detailed by their operations staff. This is the first in a CoatingsTech series of articles that will focus on sustainability, providing insight into the steps being taken and progress made throughout the industry.
