Increasing electronic media use and the global recession have been major challenges for the paper industry. Growth continues, however, in certain regions of the world and in particular sectors of the market. To leverage such opportunities for growth, however, paper manufacturers rely on numerous types of specialty paper coatings to achieve the performance characteristics demanded by the marketplace. In fact, it is the coatings on paper that impart its strength, gloss, printability, and resistance to grease and moisture—key properties required for the growing applications. In mature markets, cost pressures are driving demand for newer technologies that can provide the desired performance at a lower price.
