Nearly all cars and trucks today have a glossy finish. And that is what most consumers want for their vehicles—a durable, protective, shiny finish that highlights the color and style of the car. Yet many of the concept cars presented at recent auto shows around the world have matte—or low-gloss—finishes. "These coatings provide a way to create a significantly different look without a lot of color work," notes Paul Czornij, technical manager of the Color Excellence Group at BASF, "and they have a different feeling, so there are both physical and visual elements to the effect of matte finishes." In addition, a low-gloss clearcoat has different characteristics depending on the color underneath it, and different application processes can have a noticeable impact on the appearance as well. They look particularly good on vehicles with sharp edges, according to Jane E. Harrington, manager of color styling with PPG Industries.
