Efflorescence, frosting, and surfactant leaching/staining are defects that occur with architectural and masonry coatings. They are the result of material migrating to the surface of the coating and/or substrate, thereby hurting appearance and possibly interfering with topcoatability and recoatability. Efflorescence is associated with masonry梥tone, brick, concrete, stucco, mortar, and grout. It consists of white crystalline deposits from the drying of water-soluble salts that have leached from the masonry itself. Efflorescence is more common on un-painted masonry than on painted surfaces, but can occur under or over a coating. Sometimes it pushes the coating right off the substrate! An example of that happening on an interior basement wall is shown in Figure 1.
