Scientific archeology is a rapidly expanding area of study and one in which expertise and experience in archeology and chemistry are com-bined to elucidate information about older cultures and civilizations. Various analytical methods are utilized in combination with techniques such as pollen analysis, dendrochronology, and radiocarbon dating. Evaluation of pigments found on materials excavated from arche-ological sites and in the paints and inks used in medieval manuscripts has helped characterize these important objects. Sister Mary Virginia Orna, O.S.U. (Order of Saint Ursula), professor of chemistry at the College of New Rochelle and Editor-at-Large of Chemical Heritage magazine, has been analyzing pigments and the historical recipes used to make them for several years. The research she and her colleagues have conducted has resulted in a much greater understanding of the formulation and use of pigments throughout history.
