Determination of Neutral Content— J.Russell, Chairman, reported that the aim of the work continues to be the development of a more rapid method for the measurement of the neutral content of tall oil fractions without the use of diethyl ether. The basis of the method is the use of solid phase extraction columns to separate the neutrals from the acid components of the tall oil fractions. At the last meeting D. Scott offered to study the proposed method in detail and also examine the composition of the neutral fraction by GC. He reported that the selected resin was satisfactory and that the preferred solvent was 10% methanol in hexane. The major change he made was to increase the test sample size substantially and so giving a higher weight of neutrals. Under these conditions he found the neutral content of the test tall oil fatty acid to be 2.03% with a standard deviation of 0.15%.
