AIR TRAFFIC - Global passenger travel demand jumped by 8.6% in February to post the fastest growth rate in eight years during the first two months but freight traffic remains weak, according to new data from the International Air Transport Association. Europe is the largest market for international traffic with a 24% share and saw a gain of 7.7% in February, while the second-largest, the Asia-Pacific region, was up by 11.2% (JFI Feb.15’16). Carriers based in the Middle East recorded the strongest growth rate of 16.9% for international traffic. India paced the expansion in domestic markets with a huge 25% gain, followed by the US (+8.9%), China (+8.2%) and Australia (+4.6%). Economic recession depressed travel demand in Brazil by 3%, while Russian traffic growth of 3.4% was one-third the rate that prevailed over the last five years.
