Last week the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a so-called “endangerment finding” which paves the way for the regulation of US aircraft emissions. US efforts to develop new C02 standards are closely aligned with parameters set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), since EPA typically follows their lead in devising aircraft pollution limits. The agency is waiting for ICAO to officially approve CO2 standards for future aircraft at its General Assembly in October before moving forward with a US standard that is “at least as stringent” (JFI Jun.15’15).
