Taking a long-term view, France’s Total sees a future energy landscape emerging that will be more diversified. Unlike other transport sectors which have alternatives such as electricity and natural gas, liquid fuels will still have a major role to play in aviation, Philippe Marchand, Total New Energies’ director of biotechnology, told Jet Fuel Intelligence in a recent interview. For that reason, Total has made a long-term strategic investment in the second wave of biojet fuels development. Aircraft manufacturers are exploring the feasibility of other means of propulsion, but engines running on liquid fuels are likely to power aircraft for the next 20 years, he projects.
