Finland’s Finnair operated its flight on Sep. 23 from Helsinki to New York with an Airbus A330 using sustainable biojet fuel to demonstrate its commitment to low-carbon aviation fuels as world leaders convened at the UN Climate Summit last Tuesday. The biofuel mixture for the flight was supplied by SkyNRG Nordic, a joint venture set up earlier this year between the Dutch firm and Norway-based Statoil Aviation (JFI Jun.30’14). The fuel was provided to Finnair in a 50-50 mixture with conventional jet fuel, with the biofuel portion produced in part from recycled cooking oil.
