A strike by French air traffic controllers threw a wide swath of European airspace into disarray early last week before it was called off on Wednesday, as flights were canceled, diverted or delayed at the start of the summer holiday period. The work stoppage by one of France’s largest unions was protesting budget cuts needed to implement the Single European Sky (SES), which would replace the outmoded patchwork of 37 civilian air traffic control (ATC) organizations in Europe with a single ATC management system (JFI Jun.9’14).
