A case of compressive optic neuropathy caused by sphenoid sinus cholesterol granuloma.

Cholesterol granuloma is a histopathological term that describes a fibrous granulation tissue consisting of cholesterol clefts, foreign body giant cells, foam cells, and mac-rophages filled with hemosiderin pigments. It is a rare entity and most commonly occurs in the middle ear cavity and mastoid air cell complex. Less frequent locations include the frontal bone, zygoma, and paranasal sinuses. Until now, among cases occurring in the paranasal sinuses, only two have been reported in the sphenoid sinus. Moreover, to our knowledge, no case of cholesterol granuloma associated with compressive optic neuropathy has been reported. Here, we report a single case of compressive optic neuropathy caused by a sphenoid sinus cholesterol granuloma.
