摘要

A strike by workers at Coal India Ltd (CIL) was called off after just two days of a threatened five days of action after the Indian government agreed to hear their concerns. The strike had been called to protest the issuing of an executive decree by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to implement reforms of the country's notoriously inefficient coal industry. The decree was passed in response to the Supreme Court's decision to cancel more than 200 coal mining licenses issued since 1993. It sets up an auction of these cancelled blocks, initially for captive use but allows for the possibility of commercial mining in the future. Currently, CIL is the only company allowed to mine coal for sale on the open market.
