摘要

In 1997, Sweden passed its Vision Zero plan into law, pledging to eliminate road fatalities and injuries. Since then, the country has achieved remarkable progress and now boasts the safest roads in the world: according to a recent article in The Economist, only three Swedes in every 100,000 die on the roads each year - well below the average 5.5 per 100,000 across the EU and 11.4 per 100,000 in the US. The reduction in the number of people dying on Sweden's roads is not unique. Since road accident deaths peaked in the 1970s, the number has been consistently dropping in rich countries (although it is still on the rise in poorer countries as car sales rise). But Sweden has achieved much greater success than others.
