A rotary breaker is an ideal piece of equipment for reducing bituminous coal to the size needed for efficient cleaning in a coal preparation plant, while removing refuse such as stones and pyrite balls and minimising the amount of fines produced in the process. Rotary breakers tend to be very low maintenance pieces of equipment, which likely contributes to them being overlooked at times. More attention tends to be given to equipment that requires more frequent parts replacement. However, if proper preventative maintenance is not performed on rotary breakers, the repairs, when they are required, can be very costly. The purpose of this article is to discuss the items on a rotary breaker that require the most attention and what actions can be taken in terms of preventative maintenance in order to minimise costly and unnecessary downtime.
