While it might be tempting to conclude that the age of coal is drawing to a close, the world's most widely-used fossil fuel for electricity generation is certainly not going away anytime soon. In particular, China and India will remain reliant on coal for power generation over the next decade. Energy poverty is a key concern in both countries and coal will remain the only realistic option for providing cheap and abundant energy for the local population over the medium term. As environmental concerns continue to heat up, countries around the world are adopting stricter regulations that target coal. Notably, the US is escalating its so-called "war on coal". Not only is the US blocking the construction of new coal-fired power plants domestically, but the country is also discouraging multilateral development banks from financing coal-fired power plants abroad.
