Increased German coal import figures in 2013 stem mainly from the country's political decision to move away from nuclear power. Consequently, more coal is needed to cope with the demands of the hungry German energy and steel industries. Extrapolated figures from the German Coal Importer Association show that the country imported more than 50 million t of hard coal last year - a rise of 16%. The top three suppliers are Russia, the US and Colombia.
