THE AGE OF EXPLORATION

Over the past three decades, indonesia has evolved to become the world's greatest exporter of thermal coal and has overtaken Australia as the world's largest coal exporter. During the 1980s, the country witnessed a significant expansion in coal exploration activities, particularly on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. Coal production is concentrated on Kalimantan mainly because of its strategic proximity to the fastest-growing coal markets in Asia (China, India, Japan and South Korea).
