Workforce trends in the US energy and mining industries suggest a potential vacuum could develop in the number of skilled and experienced workers available. As the baby boom generation retires, the US faces the loss of a large number of experienced energy and mining workers in industry, academia and the government. At the same time, the current system is not producing enough qualified workers to fill future jobs. Some innovative solutions are being pursued, but more needs to be done to maintain a skilled workforce.
