David Hughart, the former presidentof Massey Energy subsidiary Green Valley Resource Group, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to impede the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and violating mine health and safety laws. The charges have been brought against Hughart as part of an ongoing investigation into the death of 29 miners in West Virginia in 2010. An underground explosion at the Upper Big Branch coal mine, which was operated by Massey Energy, resulted in one of the worst US coal mining disasters for decades.
