Germany is Europe's biggest electricity market. At the end of 2011, Germany's power plant capacity totalled 167,820 MW (net), and power generation totalled 579.3 billion kWh (net). Of the total power plant capacity, 27,590 MW was accounted for by hard coal and 19,977 MW by lignite. Lignite made a 140.7 billion kWh contribution to power generation, and hard coal 105.1 billion kWh. Coal's share in electricity generation in 2011 was 42.2% (Figure 1).
