Coal has been a leader in powering the US for nearly a century. But recent, increasingly stringent, environmental regulations could limit its future as a driver of local and national growth. Some have perceived these regulations as a "war on coal". Alternatively, it could be viewed as an opportunity. The pressures on coal do not simply come from regulations, but also from the low price of natural gas and its perception as a "cleaner" fuel source. This also correlates with public opinion.
